Staff Sergeant James H. Wilson III distinguished himself by meritorious service as Weather Forecaster, Detachment 5, 7th Weather Squadron, 4th Air Support Operation Group, Illesheim, Germany. During this time Sergeant Wilson deployed five times in direct support of live-fire training where he crafted over 400 forecasts and command briefs. His adept support enabled the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade and other United States Army Forces in Europe to certify for Operating Enduring Freedom. Sergeant Wilson instructed tactical meteorology to 15 nations'​ members during Europe's premier close air support exercise Allied Strike, bolstering joint operations. Furthermore, Sergeant Wilson executed critical meteorological over-watch to include authoring 48 weather observations at an abort landing site in support of the National Aeronautic and Space Administration's final space shuttle mission. In addition, he was named Outstanding Performer during the unit's standard and evaluation inspection and was crucial to the "Excellent"​ rating. Sergeant Wilson was recognized as the United States Air Forces in Europe outstanding Battlefield Weather Airman of the Year 2010, 7th Weather Squadron Battlefield Weather Non-comissioned Officer of the Year 2011 and received the Commandant's Leadership Award upon graduating Airman Leadership School. Finally, he was instrumental to the squadron earning the 2011 Air Force Battlefield Weather Squadron of the Year. The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant Wilson reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
